Children's Stone Carving Workshops

Children take to stone carving faster than most adults. Give a kid a mallet and a chisel, and within minutes they're completely absorbed — chipping, shaping, brushing away dust, checking their progress. They leave with something real. A piece of natural New Zealand stone they shaped with their own hands.

I've run children's workshops for birthday parties, school holiday programmes, family events and community days. The age range is wide — from around six years old right through to teenagers — and every one of them surprises themselves by the end.

How It Works

Every workshop starts with a safety briefing — how to use the workbench, how to hold the tools, what to do and what not to do. Child-sized tools are provided so everything is the right scale. Then we get into it.

Each child works on their own piece of Oamaru stone from start to finish. I guide them through cutting, shaping and carving their design. Simpler designs for younger children, more ambitious pieces for older kids who want the challenge. By the end of the session, every child has a finished piece to take home.

Workshops run for a minimum of two hours. I bring everything — stone, tools and benches — and set up and pack down at your location.

I can set up outdoors or indoors, and I bring everything with me so there's nothing for you to arrange on the day.
