What Clients Say

Every sculpture starts with a conversation. Here's what some of the people I've worked with have to say about the experience.

Oamaru stone sculpture combining pikorua and koru — commissioned by Kristine Chadwick, carved by Shaugn David Briggs

When my husband Matt came to New Zealand, he fell in love with the place. He bought a pounamu pikorua. The pikorua represents the path of life, and it can also symbolize the strong bond between lovers. Matt wore his pounamu every day until he died in 2013.

When I was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer, I chose a beautiful heart-shaped koru as a tattoo — a little reminder to me of my cancer journey. It represents new beginnings and strength. When I came home to New Zealand in October 2021, I found a flat with a little garden. But something was missing. I found the sculptor Shaugn Briggs, who does beautiful work in Oamaru stone, and asked if he could create something combining Matt's pikorua with my koru.

When Shaugn came back to me with a draft design, he told me his story. He's the youngest of five siblings, and he lost his three brothers in the space of a few years to illness. When I heard that, I knew I'd found the right artist. Someone who knew what it was like to lose people you love, and someone who understood the importance of the piece he was carving to me.

My sculpture was carved with real aroha. Shaugn understood what I wanted. He understood why it mattered to me. And he delivered something beautiful. So, if you'd like something special for your garden, I highly recommend Shaugn's beautiful work.

"I contacted Shaugn to create a piece for my garden that represents family connections, love and our journeys. Shaugn was so good to work with keeping me up to date with his progress every step of the creation. Sending me images of what the sculpture would look like in the garden was really helpful. I am so thrilled with the sculpture and it looks fantastic in my garden."

Large Oamaru stone koru sculpture commissioned for a North Canterbury garden — Shaugn David Briggs

"In May of 2012, we commissioned Shaugn to sculpt a large Koru from Oamaru stone as a centrepiece for our North Canterbury garden. Shaugn followed our brief in every way and kept us informed via emails and photographs at each stage. During the complicated process of delivery from Christchurch to Sefton, Shaugn was instrumental in arranging such a delicate task, and was there on the day to guide and assist in the positioning. We are both thrilled with the sculpture and it has become a talking point for neighbours and passers-by alike. We thank Shaugn for his dedication and professionalism in his talented work."

Three Oamaru stone memorial sculptures at Hawksby Trust — commissioned by Avis, carved by Shaugn David Briggs

"Around two years ago I was looking for someone to create three sculptures in memory of my sister who had passed away. I was very lucky to find Shaugn Briggs. Shaugn was so helpful and spent many hours with me looking for the type of design I was looking for. When they were completed I needed them placed in three gardens within the grounds of Hawksby Trust, where my sister had been a resident for more than 70 years. Shaugn took it in his hands to organise the stands for the sculptures and delivered and set them up for us. I have no hesitation in recommending Shaugn — he is a very pleasant, honest and talented sculptor."

Oamaru stone sculpture overlooking the Pacific Ocean at St Clair, Dunedin — commissioned by Lloyd Arnold, carved by Shaugn David Briggs

"I really want to say thanks so much for your wonderful Oamaru carving, which still holds pride of place in our section overlooking the Pacific Ocean here at St Clair, Dunedin. We have had so many positive comments about the carving. A real highlight was when you delivered the carving personally in a purpose-made insulated box. The carving has many meanings which are left open to the individual's own perceptions — a talking piece, as they say. I personally really appreciate your superb work and the art that you have provided to our family."

Serendipity — Oamaru stone sculpture by Shaugn David Briggs

"I had been looking for two years for the right Oamaru stone sculpture, when I finally came across Serendipity by Shaugn Briggs. I contacted Shaugn to see if it was still available and was delighted to find it was. Due to my location, I was unable to view the sculpture in person. Shaugn made it easy by providing additional photos, which sealed the deal. He contacted the freight company, wrapped and packed the sculpture to ensure it arrived in one piece, and provided detailed information on installing, care and protection. This sculpture is well crafted and looks spectacular in my garden. When dealing with Shaugn, he has made it easy and hassle free and I would recommend his work to anyone."
