If there's one thing that makes stone carving easier, safer, and more enjoyable, it's a good workbench. This is the most important piece of equipment you'll buy — and the one I get asked about most often.
Why the Workbench Matters
Carving stone without a proper bench is hard work. The stone shifts, your posture suffers, and it becomes difficult to work safely. A good bench locks the stone firmly in place so you can focus entirely on carving — not on stopping it from sliding around. It also lets you work at the right height for your body, which makes a real difference over the course of a long session.
What I Recommend
I use a height-adjustable lift bench and recommend it to all my students. I've tried a few over the years, and this bench style consistently outperforms fixed-height alternatives for stone carving. Here's what to look for:
Height Adjustable
Unwind the handles at the base, lift to your preferred height, and lock it in place. Particularly important if you have a bad back — working at the wrong height will wear you out fast.
Sliding Clamp System
Mini clamps for smaller pieces, large clamps for bigger work. The clamps slide into any position along the rail and can be set to a 90-degree angle, which is what fully secures an irregular stone, so it can't move in any direction while you're striking.

Don't underestimate how much a height-adjustable bench changes things — especially if you're going to be carving for more than an hour at a time. Getting the height right for your body means you can work with proper posture and put your energy into the carving, not into compensating for an awkward stance.

Always clamp your stone down before you start carving. A stone that shifts mid-strike can cause serious injury. Take the extra thirty seconds to get it locked in properly — it's worth it every time.
